Smoke alarm placement is extremely important and having more than one home smoke alarm is preferred. Installing smoke alarms in the right areas of your home is essential for the earliest detection of a fire.
Placement of Smoke Detectors
 - Have at least one smoke detector per level of your home.
- Install both a smoke and co detector (carbon monoxide detector) near each sleeping area.
- Consider putting a smoke alarm in your child’s room because most fires happen either early in the morning or late at night when most children are sleeping.
- Put a smoke alarm in your basement.
- Keep smoke detectors far enough away from the kitchen. This will help prevent false alarms when you are cooking. (If your alarm goes off while cooking, just wave a towel in front of it instead of disabling the alarm.)
- Be sure you are installing smoke alarms on the ceiling or high on the wall since smoke rises. This will give you the earliest detection of a fire as possible.

**Follow the manufacturer’s smoke alarm installation instructions for absolute proper smoke detector placement. **
And, most home smoke alarms will give a signal when the battery is low. This helps you maintain your smoke detector so that you can be sure that your children are as safe as possible.
