Safety door locks are a great way to protect your children from smashed fingers or rooms and areas in your home that are off-limits like out to the garage or pool area. It’s always important to stress to your children that they should never play with doors.
One game of hide and seek can end in tears or a hospital trip if their little fingers get caught between the door and door jamb. It’s just not worth it. So, baby proof the doors in your home with safety locks, door knob covers, and finger guards.
Tips for Your Safety Door Locks
- 1. Get safety locks that can easily be opened and unlocked by an adult in case of a fire or other emergency.
- 2. Install all safety locks up high and out of the reach of your children.
- The locks should be put at the top of your doors.
- 3. Get door knob covers for your front and back doors.
- Also, you can put these door covers on any door of any room that you don’t want your child getting into or they could lock themselves into.
There are a couple different kinds of door knob covers that you can get: One where you push in on the side buttons and then turn the door knob and the other where there are openings on the side of the door knob cover and you grab the door knob through the holes and turn.
Either of these options will be effective baby proofing. Just be sure that you, as the adult, can easily get in and out of the doors not only in case of an emergency, but for your sanity level, too!
- 4. Get a door lever lock for doors that have levers to open them instead of door knobs.
- I like the ones that lock automatically and reset after each time you pass through.

- 5. Get sliding door locks for your sliding glass doors.
These are wedges that you can put in place that keep your doors from opening past the amount you want them opened.

- 6. If you have a pool, put a lock on any doors leading out to it.
You might want to consider a pool alarm door lock. This lock signals an alarm within 7 seconds of someone opening the door. You need to make sure you also have the proper fences and child safety alarms or a pool safety alarm.

- 7. Install safety locks for all your bi-folding doors.
These doors are just an accident waiting to happen. It is so easy for your child to get their fingers in between those folding doors. These locks are placed at the top of the doors and hold the folding doors together. You can find locks that can adjust to the size of your door.

8. Get finger guards that fit into the area between the door and the door jamb. There are some on the market that close up that entire area where so many kids get their fingers stuck. It will block off both sides of the door where the hinges are. So, your child is safe from either side of the room.
- 9. Install door guards that prevent the door from closing all the way.
These guards go over the top or side of your door and keep the door from slamming shut and catching your little one’s fingers. These door guards also protect your child from getting their fingers caught in the door jamb because the door won’t close all the way.
- 10. Use safety devices for your doors that will not break into pieces to avoid a choking hazard for you child.
 - 11. Get one piece door stops for behind all your doors.
- Replace any door stops that are the spring and rubber door stops. These have the little rubber caps on the ends of them. These rubber caps are way too easy to take off and have proven to be a choking hazard.
The new door stops don’t have springs, rubber caps, or any sharp edges. Remove all old door stop versions and replace them with the one piece models.
Safety door locks are not in place of baby safety gates or child safety alarms. All aspects of baby proofing are essential to keeping a safe home for your children.
