Cabinet latches are your main focus as far as safety in the kitchen and the bathroom. There are a lot of potential dangers within those rooms like knives, chemicals, cosmetics, medicines, etc.
Child safety locks and cabinet latches keep those little fingers from true dangers. Having child safety latches installed on not only your cabinets, but also your appliances and toilets will give you some peace of mind that everything that you do not want your baby to touch is locked and out of sight. So, the baby proofing continues! Depending on what kind of cabinets you have in both your kitchen and your bathroom will determine which of the following safety latches and locks will work best for you.
Cabinet Latches
 - Kidco Adjustable Locking Strap
Parent Reviews: **Parent’s Choice** Parents seem to love this product. Many parents with cabinet doors without handles found this product to be the best. A few report that the adhesive wasn’t quite strong enough, but overall, most parents don’t seem to struggle with that.

- Safety 1st Grip N Go
Parent Reviews: Ideally, you are supposed to just slide the button and you can remove the lock, but many parents found this kind of cabinet latch really difficult to deal with. They found it really hard for adults to get into. It’s great the child can’t get into it, but so frustrating if you, the parent, can’t get in the cabinet. ARGH!

- Kidco Sliding Cabinet Lock
Parent Reviews: **Parent’s Choice** Most parents seem really happy with these cabinet latches. A slight con seems to be that they can be a bit difficult for adults to open. But, many parents said they were really happy with how strong these were and they were great for all of their cabinets especially ones that held chemicals, cleaners, medicines, etc.

- Mommy’s Helper Cabinet Slide Latch
Parent Reviews: These child safety latches got mixed reviews. Some parents were very happy with how it kept their baby out of the cabinet and found them sturdy and reliable. However, other parents found them flimsy and completely non-productive.

- Kidco Adhesive mount cabinet and drawer lock
Parent Reviews: Most parents have found these cabinet latches to be great. Occasionally, there seem to be difficulties getting the adhesive off, but overall, most parents didn’t have this trouble.

- Safety 1st Wide grip latches/Spring and release cabinet latches
Parent Reviews: The reviews are somewhat mixed on this cabinet door latch. Some parents are finding that their child can easily get past the lock and into the cabinet. However, other parents, like my daughter, have found that these work best for their particular cabinets and needs. So, this is hit or miss.

- Kidco Swivel Cabinet Door Latch (can also be used on drawers)
Parent Reviews: **Parent’s Choice** Parents say they are easy to use and they stay in place. These baby safety latches are attached with hardware to the inside of the cabinet door. I know a lot of people are hesitant to drill into their cabinets, baseboards, etc, but these kinds of locks, cabinet latches and baby gates are the strongest and most secure. Children are smart and you really want to protect them as best you can. Sometimes screwing in the hardware is your best bet.

- Safety 1st Push N Snap Lock
Parent Reviews: Much like the Grip N Go locks, parents found this really hard to get into. Some have found it to be helpful, but the majority of parents are unhappy with how this lock works.

- Kidco Adhesive Mount Magnet Lock
Parent Reviews: Most parents really liked these child safety locks. It’s easy to install and parents found it really effective. A few seem to be unhappy with the lock in that it may not work if you have metal hardware in your cabinet or if you don’t get the lock on straight. But, overall, parents seem to really like this kind of cabinet latch. After you mount the magnet lock, there is a key that you use to actually get into the cabinet. And, some parents were unhappy with needing a key. Some parents were frustrated with the fact that they kept losing the key! Others found they could put the magnetic lock on their refrigerator and it kept them from losing them. **Special Note: The packaging on this product can be misleading as it says it’s a magnet/lock set. However, in most cases, when buying this product, you must buy the keys SEPARATELY**

- Safety 1st Tot-Lok
Parent Reviews: Overall, the reviews seem good on these cabinet latches. However, it does seem parents are having a difficult time installing them, but once it’s installed, they work great. **Special Note: The key is sold SEPARATELY**
Refrigerator Locks

- Safety 1st Multi Purpose Plastic Latch - Refrigerator & Freezer
Parent Reviews: mixed reviews.

- Safety 1st LockRelease Fridge Latch
Parent Reviews: This lock gets mixed reviews. Some parents seem to really love it and others seem to be adamantly against it. Despite their differences in opinion, all the parents seem to comment on the fact that it is really easy to pull this off your refrigerator because it is held on by adhesive. Either their child was able to do it, they had a side by side refrigerator, or the adults in the house forgot it was on, opened the door, and the lock popped off. Many parents advised other parents to get two or three of these locks to have as back-ups for when that happens.

- Fridge Guard Appliance Child Lock
Parent Reviews: Really mixed. Some parents find it’s easy to break, while others are finding it’s incredibly sturdy and are really happy.

- Safety 1st Oven Lock
Parent Reviews: Good reviews. Same warning as other adhesive products, too much strength will rip the lock off.

- Safety 1st Oven Front Lock
Parent Reviews: ** Parent’s Choice** Overwhelming positive reviews for these oven baby safety latches. Slight Warning: Depending on where your oven handle is will determine whether or not this oven lock will work for you. This lock could also be used on your dishwasher!

- Mommy’s Helper Toilet Seat Lid-Lok
Parent Reviews: This toilet seat lock gets mixed reviews. Some parents are extremely happy and say they can’t find anything better. Others seem entirely unhappy with this product. It is agreed upon that following the directions and installing it properly is incredibly important.

- Kidco Toilet Lock
Parent Reviews: This gets mixed reviews as well, however, more parents seem to be unhappy. Overall, every parent has the same issue with this lock: once you have it installed, it raises the back of the seat up making the front and the back of your toilet seat uneven. When you, then, sit on your toilet seat, you either slip or the seat breaks. And, it leaves just enough room for your child’s little hands to get stuck or throw a toy down your toilet.
Toilet Paper Guards

- Safety 1st Toilet Paper Guard
Parent Reviews: Mixed reviews. Some think it’s a life-saver (well, toilet paper saver, I guess!) and others find it hard to install and more of a pain for the adults.

- Mom Inventors TP Saver
Parent Reviews: Overall, this seems to be helpful. It only allows one sheet of toilet paper to be released at one time, so it really does do the job it’s set out to do. One little catch: adults tend to undo the guard so they can really use the toilet paper and forget to put it back on….some bathrooms have found themselves “toilet papered” by the toddlers after that happens!)
**When you have found the toilet lock, refrigerator lock, and drawer/cabinet latches that you are happy with, remember to buy a few extra to keep with you when you travel. So, every toilet, bathroom and kitchen…wherever you may be….is safe. **
There are many different kinds of cabinet latches and appliance/toilet safety latches and locks on the market today. The examples listed above were some of the most common products parents are presented with in stores and on-line. If you find that one of the child safety cabinet locks or baby safety latches you bought isn’t the one for you, keep trying! The kitchen and the bathroom can be dangerous rooms for your child, so keep looking until you find the right lock for you.
